Learning Styles & the beauty of homeschooling/unschooling

The baauty of homeschooling is that you can give one-on-one teaching and honor learning styles & focus more on favorites than is possible in the school system...

Micah was having trouble with school because the math was too easy for him & his teacher wanted him to do all the problems even though he was bored beyond tears.. now he has trouble with math... he wants to be able to do advanced science, for which he will need math, but I guess we'll see how we can work through this math resistance...he hates it because he was not appropriately challenged in public school.

This is the child who I showed ONE knitting stitch to at age 6 before he said "let me try" and pretty much had the knit stitch figured out... took Evan a couple of weeks of hands on knitting together, frustration, some tears, etc... a little practice each day & he finally got it...he made up his mind that he WAS going to learn to knit and that was that... I recognized how he needed to learn it & kept an eye out for when he started getting frustrated & would say okay enough for now...
Once Evan learned, he made a rainbow sleeveless tunic which one of our teddy bears wears proudly)..

Micah's learning style is "show me, I got it, leave me alone"...that said, he will spend hours reading about bead projects or the "how things work" book or something like that.

Fish

One of our neighbors dropped off 2 guppies in a vase (which I will use for still life flower set ups) yesterday with a note "For The Kids"... the boys immediately went to work on cleaning & setting up a 20 gallon tank for it.. later in the day we went to Walmart to pick up a heater & a couple of other things we needed for the fish... (along with rawhides for Opus & Goldie)...we also picked up 5 more fish: 3 corydoras and 2 dwarf gouramies...the guppies are pretty: flame tail guppies...

Now that we finally have some cooler weather, I'm going to get a few more things done around the house... in the part that's not air conditioned... hopefully we will get more of the house done before it gets cold...
